Shape and Volume of Solid Liquid and Gases

Shape and Volume:

  • A solid has a definite shape and volume. A solid retains its shape and hence the volume of solid is fixed. For example, book, salt and sugar crystals, table etc. As the particles of matter are continuously moving, they posses kinetic energy. Since the movement of particles in a solid is restricted, these particles can only vibrate about their mean position of rest. Hence the kinetic energy of the particles in a solid is much less. Hence, they have a definite shape and volume.
  • A liquid has no definite shape and volume. A liquid takes the shape of the vessel in which it is kept
